just like in The Matrix
Oct. 29th, 2016 06:55 amThe other night I was doing a building check at work, and got chatting with An Important Person. She was headed out, and mentioned relaxing, which I agreed was important, and she said, ‘What do you do to wind down?’
‘Oh, I like to read,’ was my reply, and then I could see it coming at me in slow motion — ‘Read anything good lately?’
She even doubled down with ‘Do you prefer more new stuff, or the classics?’
And I’m all about advocating for fanfic, but I really didn’t want to tell this Important Person Who Could Fire Me that yeah, absolutely, this week I’ve been reading a lot of time travel fic, which is not usually my jam but is sometimes just what I’m in the mood for.
So I pulled out all my best conversational Matrix moves and said, ‘Usually newer things; a lot of self-published authors.’
Boom. She talked about re-reading things from school and how different they seem now, and the conversation wrapped up. Successful evasion completed.
Sending out a big thank you to all you “self-published authors of newer things” out there!
