I really wanted to like this movie, and yet I didn’t. Here’s how I’d break it down in my own personal enjoyment scale.

*Visually: Awesome! I thought the way the movie coordinated movement with music was super pretty and super watchable. Would watch again! (Specifically: every time Elsa stomped her foot and magic radiated out was A+ for me.)

*Musically: Good! I actually really liked the musical intro to the movie. And I liked that there was no long villain song. (I guess it does make me a little concerned that so many moms identify so strongly with ‘Let it Go’? It seems like a great singalong car song, I’ll give it that, but it’s not exactly the anthem of a happy and fulfilled generation, right? Maybe I’m missing something.)

*Story: Eh. I was disappointed. I mean, it was leagues beyond Brave in terms of coherency (if you ignore Kristoff’s entire backstory, because — what?!). I didn’t think it was a bad story, I just didn’t personally like it. (Hans, how could you?) Also, dead parents? Can we please get over that being considered a necessity in animated movies?

*Extra notes:
-someone on tumblr suggested that Ana ALSO has magic powers, most likely super-strength / invulnerability, which actually explains a lot of the handwave-y parts of the movie

-I was not expecting the trolls! Very Jim Henson-esque.

-I totally wanted a harlequin-style romcom instead, in which everything could play out the same until Elsa wound up captured by Hans & co. Instead of tossing her in the dungeon, she could be confined to the royal chambers, or whatever (she was the queen, right?) and anyway, there would be more time in there and somehow she and Hans would realize their LOVE CONNECTION but both obviously feel bad about it (see: Ana), while Ana and Kristoff were huddling together for warmth and also falling in love and stuff, and they would all meet up and it would be hilarious and awkward and ALL JUST A MISUNDERSTANDING, everyone can go home now, nothing to see here.
