marcicat: (cat with heart)

Years ago (2010, actually), I wrote a NaNoWriMo novel in which people give Christmas presents to a baby. (There’s not much more to the plot than that, honestly.) Because NaNo is hard, and browsing baby gifts is fun, I apparently spent enough time doing it to ping amazon’s radar.

To this day, I receive announcements of ‘deals in the baby store!’ from amazon.com. While there is a part of me that is irritated by amazon’s endless optimism that maybe someday I’ll actually make a purchase, I also find it:

1. Hilarious.

2. Kind of reassuring, because it seems to indicate that amazon’s algorithms aren’t yet smart enough to extrapolate over time. (As in, if I needed baby things in 2010, shouldn’t I now be getting preschool stuff?)

Sometimes I get the urge to go browse the most random things I can think of, just to throw off the system.

They won't stop suggesting baby stuff; they'll just also send you ads for other things. In my experience.
