work words

Okay, start with the positive: I love that my current work role is unimportant enough that I am not required to show up at “voluntary” employee events!
(My workplace didn’t hold a Christmas party, probably for many good reasons, but they are holding a New Year’s party, which for probably other good reasons, is going to be this weekend.)
Things like this tend to include: driving places I’m not familiar with, lots of noise and people I don’t know, food and drinks I don’t like, and a complete disruption of the way I actually enjoy spending my weekends. And I get it — bonding with coworkers is beneficial in a company-wide sort of way. When I was a manager, I recognized that it was my responsibility to show up at stuff like this and toe the company line.
But now? No way. So now when people say, “Are you going to the thing on Saturday?” I can say, “Nope.” And I don’t even need to make up an excuse — when people ask why I can just say, “I don’t like parties,” and that’s enough.
