So there was that quote from Doctor Who (‘The Empty Child,’ first season with Nine):

“Know how long you can knock around space without having to bump into Earth?”

“Five days? Or is it when we’re out of milk?

I often think about that when I’m trying to decide if I *really* need to go to the grocery store, or if I might as well just put it off another day.

(Cheese, I find, is often my indicator. Once I’m out of cheese, that’s it — gotta go to the store. Sometimes it’s juice, if I’m feeling like I’m doing a particularly poor job even pretending to eat 5-9 servings fruits and vegetables a day. And sometimes it’s really just because I put ‘get groceries’ on the to-do list, and it feels good to cross something off.)
