what does one do at an engagement party?
Sep. 26th, 2011 09:28 pmIf you have ever asked yourself this question, fear not! After experiencing one of these cultural milestones as a non-family member guest, I have two suggestions for those who are not party-oriented.
1. Linger by the buffet (free food!). You can always employ the strategy of filling a plate, eating it, wandering as far from the buffet as you can legitimately get (as if looking for a trash can), and then wandering back (as if you decided that perhaps just *one* more spinach puff would be a good choice.) Also, the food gives you an automatic topic of conversation.
2. A fellow party-goer explained this strategy, recommended as a method for entertaining oneself during a conversation that is dull (the specific example was a sports conversation). It works like this — every time you hear the same name twice, take a drink! (Works with alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Plus, more drinking means more trips back to the buffet, and to the bathroom, both of which take time.) You can even encourage repeat naming by asking leading questions, such as, “Wait, *who* got the touchdown?”
