marcicat: (heart dino)

Back at the start of the year, which was approximately an eon ago, I thought it would be a good idea to try out some meditation apps. (Unsurprisingly, my biggest reaction has been that streak trackers make me stressed out. Not really a new learning.)

But I recently came back to Insight Timer, and I've been trying out all the 'ambient sound' options. (As one does.) Yesterday's was 'Raindrops,' and can I just say, NOT RESTFUL. It has three components:

*The rain sound: very nice! (Though to be fair, the rain, stream, and crackling fire noises all sound pretty much the same to me.)

*The lil' background noise of crickets and stuff: excellent!

*The musical tones: NO, WHO ADDED THESE?!?!

Okay, so imagine this: there I was, thinking rain thoughts, and I'm envisioning myself at a peaceful mountain retreat, listening to the rain and the crickets, and then suddenly: musical tones! They were intermittent, but repeated regularly; the same set of tones. And my brain, completely unhelpfully, was like, 'Sounds like a doorbell!'

And it could not be dissuaded from that idea. So I spent ten minutes constantly imagining the (apparently very busy!) entryway of the peaceful mountain retreat, and wondering if maybe we could just leave the door open so people would stop ringing the darn doorbell so often.

I can only guess that 'Raindrops' is an advanced level ambient noise, for people who are looking to hone their ability to tune out distractions. Clearly I am not at that point!
