*I feel bad that I *still* haven't done my last advent craft. It is still on my list! It's going to happen! At some point!

*Christmas was good -- as good as I hoped it would be, which is always nice, and also sometimes surprising.

*It's very cold. And snowy. I sense this will be a theme, and I'm still enjoying it more than the heat and humidity of summer, but it's definitely making it less appealing to go outside for a walk.

*At some point this week I will have to go back to work. (That point is Wednesday.) I'm not sure how I feel about that, so I've decided not to think about it. (Is retirement an option? Sadly no, financially speaking.)

*Very excited to put the 'weather dome' over the bird feeder today. (It's just a clear plastic dome. Still excited!) I love our little birds. And our big birds. (And our squirrels, but don't tell our neighbors.) Very happy that no one ever told our juncos that juncos don't eat from feeders.

*It must be time for some year in review posts, right? This seems like the moment.

*Next goal: second breakfast!

I went out this morning to fill up the bird feeder, and I noticed that the hummingbird feeder was looking a little not-great. (aka I could see an ant floating in it; blech) So I figured I would clean it out and refill it today (I planned to do it tomorrow, so that's sort of on schedule?).

I was curious how the ant had managed to get inside the feeder, since the wasp guards on each port should theoretically be enough to stop them. But OH NO they were not, because it turned out the ants had CHEWED THROUGH the wasp guards.

This was disconcerting. I'm not entirely sure how to proceed that will best limit the chances of an ant-pocalypse, but I've cleaned the feeder out and made more food, and I'll put new wasp guards in. The internet suggests moving the feeder, which is theoretically an excellent suggestion, but operationally somewhat challenging. There's not that many places to move it to?

I shall consider the situation further.

WEEK 2

And so begins our second week in our new home!

A fun birding story: the former owners of the home gifted us with their bird feeder, and I've been filling it with just some plain sunflower seed-type bird seed I got at the grocery store. We've had a rose breasted grosbeak visiting regularly (a beautiful bird!).

According to the former owners, they NEVER saw a rose breasted grosbeak at the feeder. It's new, apparently. Feeling very honored by this avian welcome!

from 'Animal Speak' by Ted Andrews

"The Rose-breasted grosbeak can help us to heal all of the old wounds and hurts of family origin and reminds us that the pain will pass. Healing through music and sound therapy.

"The grosbeak has a beautiful melodious voice. This is significant. A melody is formed by a relationship between notes. A single note does not make a melody. The grosbeak can help us to see our family relationships as a true melody - each note separate but part of a larger whole.

herons!

Saw some herons yesterday on my walk, and it was A+ great. (I did take lots of pictures, but I am more enthusiastic than skilled when it comes to photography, and all of them were with my 2016 phone camera. Imagine a sunny marsh with either a white smudge or a gray-blue smudge -- that's the pictures!)

Today's goal: do enough that I feel I've Accomplished Some Things, but not so much that I feel like I've Squandered A Day Meant For Rest.
marcicat: (cookies)
1. I have EIGHT fic update notifications sitting in my inbox waiting for me to read them -- I am inundated with riches!

2. This week I left the windows open while I slept for the first time this year!

3. I walked for a short distance on the rail trail yesterday for the First Time Ever, and it was A) Fun, and B) Not Scary!

4. It's outdoor plant day! Time to go home and pick up plants from Mom! <3

5. The hummingbirds are back!

6. I rearranged the living room furniture on Friday (one of my favorite home activities), and the cat has decided it is An Acceptable Change -- success!

The hummingbirds are back, and the feeder is going up today! (Joining at least three other feeders already out, so I don’t feel too bad about being late to the party.)

One person put their feeder out in early April, which was 1) optimistic; but also 2) I’m sure the hummingbirds appreciated having food right away when they came back, so thanks for taking one for the team, ground floor apartment building stranger!

Thing I’ve Done Today:
*Took pictures of the sunrise. Very pretty! Even went out on the balcony so I could get pictures that didn’t mainly feature window glare.

Thing I’m Going To Do Today:
*IDK, probably go to work? I was reminded that it might be a slow day, for various reasons, and that would be nice.

Random Thing:
*Today is National Audubon Day! What a great day to wave at a bird!

A+ birds

There are some birds chirping outside my windows this morning, despite the dark, and the rain, and the chill. They sound very cheery. A lovely soundtrack for a Monday morning. Thanks, birds!

The red berry wreath is GONE! I hardly recognize our floor without it. It was a staunch companion for such a long, long, long, long, long time. I miss it already!

But I suppose this is a signal that winter is finally truly over. Other key indicators:

*I finally took the snowshoes out of my car.

*We’ve had the first day of the year that I didn’t take a coat to work.

*Groundhogs and robins everywhere. (Awww…)

*I heard someone complaining it was too hot outside.

*Bugs.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a live cam of nesting Layson Albatrosses in Kauai, Hawaii. Very enjoyable background to working!

And yes, it’s terrifying that google sees all and knows all, but it also means that I can search the phrase “tumblr baby bird is muppet adult bird has eyeliner” and it will *actually* lead me to the post I was looking for. Truly, we live in an astonishing time.

Work! I am going there today!

This picture has nothing to do with work, or Wednesdays, although I suppose an argument could be made that safety is always important.

But hey, check it out — wordpress is properly crossposting to dreamwidth again! That time-honored strategy of ‘do nothing and hope it fixes itself’ has come through yet again!

I haven't read much Person of Interest fic in a while, so when this one started popping up all over, I gave it a pass. But then I read it anyway. Apparently my mind is very changeable.

And I'm so glad I did! It was surprisingly charming, and I 100% have a soft spot for fics that involve tumblr.

A Field Guide to Common Birds in New York City, by Toft

When John posts it to his Tumblr later, he tags it ‘borb’ and ‘pigeon’ and ‘nyc’. Eight people ‘like’ it and one person reblogs it with the tags 'so round' and 'so thinking' and 'I love it.' John follows that person back.

Time to celebrate the day of super bowls and superb owls! Game on!

I get worried about the cat being bored in the winter. There’s just not as much that’s fun for him to do. (Not that he’s running marathons in the summer or anything, but looking out the window is more exciting when there’s a bunch of baby skunks out there than when it’s just a frost-covered pane of glass.)

So it was suggested to me (thanks Mom!) that I show him some cat videos. It turns out youtube has a surprisingly robust selection of videos specifically designed to entertain cats. And he likes them!

(I mean, right now I’m the one watching a squirrel eat birdseed; the cat’s gone off to another room, but he was here earlier!)

Good news: cat is entertained by watching videos of birds

Bonus news: I am also entertained

Sometimes words are hard, and on those days there’s coloring!

Cornell Lab of Ornithology Free Coloring Pages

(Note: They’re advertising a book, but there are 8 free sample pages that can be downloaded to color!)

1. “can you roast artichoke hearts”

(Yes. I have not tried it yet. Instead, I had mashed potatoes with roasted eggplant and green peppers, the nightshade trifecta.)

2. “solar powered Christmas lights”

(Exist. The most popular ones seem to have a battery backup, making me suspicious that perhaps the battery part works better than the solar part. Also can’t find any info about how long they need sun each day to work.)

3. “cornell lab of ornithology coloring pages”

(Coloring is one of those things I always think I like more than I seem to while I’m doing it. Free coloring pages are always a win, though.)

Hummingbirds are great. That’s really all I’ve got. Their lil’ chirpy noises, and the zippy flying, and the way they get all up in your face when the feeder gets low…

(I would like to note for the record that there are AT LEAST four other hummingbird feeders in visual range. Still, I appreciate their dedication to making sure all possible food sources are up to snuff.)

1. Called my landlord Sunday night (got voicemail, as expected). Tried not to sound freaked out. Probably sounded freaked out.

2. Took down bird feeders. While these almost certainly are what attracted the critter in the first place, still felt bad when the cardinal landed on my balcony railing this morning and looked at me reproachfully through the window.

3. Am currently “vacationing” in the other room and sleeping with ear plugs in. (Totally forgot how restful that can be!) Have no idea if critter is still making noise at 4:30 am.

4. Landlord reassuringly un-freaked out. Thinks it may be a chipmunk. (Not sure if this is better or worse.)

5. Mom thinks my cat could take a chipmunk.

birds!

Apr. 7th, 2016 06:57 am
marcicat: (pacman stealth)

Any day is better with birds, and yesterday I saw a new one at the feeder! I feel somewhat confident in saying it was a finch. (Not a goldfinch, although those have been around too!)

It was probably either a purple finch or a house finch — it didn’t exactly do a 360-degree modeling spin for me and then spell out the name in bird seed, which is probably what it would take for me to correctly ID a bird on the first try.

Still, very pretty, and fun to see a new bird!

marcicat: (freakout squirrel)

I dreamed last night about the hummingbirds coming back. It’s still too cold for that, but this morning I saw — for the first time — a lady cardinal at the feeder! A few days ago I saw Mr. Cardinal, so it’s cool to know they are both around. Not sure if they’re just passing through, or are simply very discerning locals who don’t like to look too eager by checking out a new feeder before at least four months have gone by.
