Yes, I do like to go through Yuletide alphabetically! (Or at least start that way. I've already jumped ahead to check out all the Guardian stories, and I've 'read ahead' in other letters too, but there's an overall progression through the alphabet.)

Yuletide 2019: the year of Guardian! And Captain Marvel! And the Untitled Goose Game!

Also, this adorable ghost!cat fic for the Defenders fandom:

Yuletide 2017 has arrived!

I definitely don't have the time required to really dive into it at the moment, but a quick shoutout to this summary, which is The Best:

Jessica and Matt are teaming up to fight ninjas. What a dumb idea.

A Yuletide 2016 story! For The Losers (movie-verse). Team hijinx, banter, and bonus telepathy.

Includes this perfect exchange!

“How can you not find the ocean relaxing?” Cougar asked, like that was their main problem here.

“It’s full of fish,” Jensen explained. “It’s full of fish and some of them are sharks and some of them are whales and any of them can touch you at any time.”

Cougar stared at him, and Jensen was pretty sure he could actually feel some of Cougar’s astonishment. “You get shot at. For a living,” Cougar reminded him.

“Yes, but not by fish,” Jensen said, and he felt like he’d made his point perfectly, but Cougar was visibly unimpressed.

The Adventures of Ms. Marvel and Spider-Girl (Featuring a Team-Up, Some Squishees, and One Really Inept Mage), by alliterate

Chemistry was boring, okay, homework was boring, but when Kamala gave up on it and decided to test Lockjaw’s powers by asking him to warp her to Brooklyn, rematerializing in the middle of an all-out magic battle was not exactly the kind of excitement she had in mind. She’d been thinking more, like, grabbing a bagel, that level of excitement.

It’s that time of year again — Yuletide is back!

A few fics recs as of now:

1. Qualifications (Ghostbusters)
“My mother once dreamed that a terrible calamity was going to happen. And then, the very next day, Perry Mason was cancelled.”

2. If you don’t like it you can lump it (Young Avengers, Hawkeye)
The Young Avengers’ band is also called The Young Avengers, because they’re very subtle.

3. Finding Normal (Now and Again)
“Besides, how many girls my age get to be international fugitives?”

Yuletide 2012 (apparently Yuletide is the short version of “While We Tell of Yuletide Treasure Fanfiction Challenge,” which I definitely did not remember) is like a vortex.

A vortex that eats time. Have a few days to spare? Yuletide is awesome!

Have lots of work to do? Yuletide is still awesome, but may cause side effects of self-recriminations and reminders that since the New Year hasn’t started yet, your resolution to not stay up so late doesn’t really apply.

Calvin & Hobbes continues to be a Yuletide star for me. (Technically this one is Hobbes & Bacon, but they’re all the same fandom family to me, I guess.)

“Look,” he said, “I’ll give her a talk about group-based consensual perception and community based ideas of reality, okay? That should help.”

Here is my essential problem with the Fantastic Four movie: none of the characters seem to actually have chemistry with each other. At all. Like, they don’t even come across as convincing friends, particularly friends who have known each other for ages.

I think part of it is that the movie kept getting distracted by explaining what was happening, or expositing backstory, instead of having the characters interact with each other in meaningful and interesting ways. (And of course, every ten minutes we had to have the DOOM-DOOM-DOOM-DE-DOOMDOOM villain stuff.)

Johnny had a couple interesting throwaway lines about the Storm family (“Luckily Grandma still sends care packages,” “You’re not Mom”) but that was really it. Most of the so-called character development was for the Reed/Sue romance, but Reed played the ‘I LOVE SCIENCE’ card so hard I just ended up feeling bad for him that Sue was pressuring him into a relationship he didn’t seem to really want.

Anyway, I remember liking this movie when it came out in the theater, but I was not impressed upon re-watching.

On the other hand, here is (the only) fic I currently have tagged ‘fantastic.four’ on pinboard, which did not disappoint at all upon re-reading:

Party of Two, by Traincat, for Yuletide 2010
Johnny Storm/Peter Parker

“We should hang without masks,” Johnny elaborated. “Well, without you in mask. I wouldn’t be wearing a mask, obviously. I mean, I could, if it would make you feel more comfortable. Are you just really into masks?”

This kid I once knew, by Minnow (Calvin & Hobbes)
Susie in college, finding Calvin’s comic strips online. I think I was most drawn to this one because somewhere deep down in my heart of hearts, I hope I someday feel this mature about my former classmates. It’s nice to think that maybe we all do grow up to wish each other the best.

She doesn’t write, except to write, “I love this one. I love them all,” on her favorite strip, anonymously.

Lions and Tigers, by starlingthefool (Calvin & Hobbes / Inception fusion)
Eames is Calvin, all grown up (mostly).

In a jungle in Eames’ subconscious, Arthur turns at the sound of a twig snapping. He turns with his gun drawn, muscles taut and ready for a fight. He’s not ready to see a tiger; massive, lithe, striped orange and black in great big fuck-off stripes, paw frozen in the act of stepping towards him, green eyes fixed on Arthur’s.

Zeroes and Ones, by classlicity (Inception/Tron fusion)
Inception on the Grid! (What more do you need?)

Tapping twice on his visor to make it recede, Arthur narrows his eyes at the Trojan who’s conspicuously cycling his power lines through the rainbow again. “The chance to cause chaos, destruction. You viruses like that, right?”

Of Bowties, Trains, and Pajama Parties, by igrab (Tron, Tron Legacy)
Sam and Ed meet at Encom’s ‘take your child to work day.’

When Flynn got back to his office after his afternoon meetings (which, booooring), he found the boys in his office playing with trains – which he could have expected – but also both wearing pajamas, which he should have expected but somehow didn’t.

2. We have power and I am so, *so* grateful. Also, shoveling snow is quite the arm workout. I’ve been looking forward to going to bed all day.

3. I have been reveling in Yuletide fics. None of them were for me, and yet they’re sort of all for everyone, right?

Yuletide ::hearts:: So Far

Party of Two (Spider-Man Ultimateverse)
“We should hang without masks,” Johnny elaborated. “Well, without you in mask. I wouldn’t be wearing a mask, obviously. I mean, I could, if it would make you feel more comfortable. Are you just really into masks?”
(Peter Parker and Johnny Storm “hang out” on Johnny’s birthday.)

Proper Villains (Oceans movies)
“Litmus configuration test? With a Number 2 pencil? Nice.”
(Basher first meets Rusty in a holding cell, then runs into him years later.)

Down the Shore Everything’s All Right (Hawaii Five-0)
Danny manfully resists giving himself any more head injuries. “See, no. I bet a nationwide survey of not-crazy individuals would conclude that telling your work partner that you’ll take care of everything does not, in fact, equal come live with me and be my love. My love without pants.”
(Danny gets hurt and Steve steps in to help.)
