So…

There I was, wasting time puttering around on the internet, and I followed a link to another link (and so on) and somehow found myself looking at this:

(nabbed the pic from amazon)

The actual name of this figure is apparently “Big Time Spiderman.” (Or, as Amazon lists it: BIG TIME SPIDER-MAN.) I’d like to suggest that this is what Spiderman would look like in the Tron grid.

But I think the real question here is: WHY is Spiderman’s pinkie finger SO LONG?

Fic:
Magnetic, by boombangbing
Because *yes* this is how awesome the Avengers could be together, with Tony dominating the media, and Thor not even *having* an indoor voice, and Pepper being a bamf, and Steve being confused, and everyone else eyerolling all over the place. Loved it!

How does that song go? “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on”? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’s been a wild ride, and not always in the fun way. But the joy of nano-noveling isn’t in the *doing*, necessarily, but in the *having done* — looking back and going “I wrote this?! How did I do that?”

That’s where I am tonight. I wrote this?! How? Why? And in a nano classic, while skimming through the file: I don’t remember *any* of this!

But here it is. 50,000 words of fic. Amen.

title: this is how the world begins
author: marcicat

word count:
summary: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and all the fandoms come out to play.

And really, was it that much of a stretch? Vegas had vacationing demons, Ohio had angels that ate pie, New York had masked superheroes. Okay.

Note 1: I have not read through this fic. At all. Edits/fixes still to come; posting now as a placeholder and proof of finishing.

Note 2: Somewhere along the way I apparently decided ‘chimerae’ was an acceptable pluralization of ‘chimera,’ despite all logic and grammatical evidence to the contrary. Sorry about that.

Three (3) reasons why this fic was written:

1. because I thought to myself, “it’s January, I should write something”

2. because badgers are internet famous, yo

3. because everyone should have the chance to use the line “It really *was* a robot head” at some point

The Badger Fic

It’s a movies-only, multi-fandom silliness project. Tron, Inception, Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Chronicles of Narnia), Fast & Furious, Stonehenge Apocalypse.

*Back* to Narnia? Well. The mind boggled, didn’t it?

Nifty character comparison list!

Dominic Cobb ~ Kevin Flynn
the genius with crazy eyes; the one in charge; the one who disappears and leaves his child(ren) behind; the one who keeps telling people what to do but then not doing it

Arthur ~ Tron
the loyal partner; the one who fights for crazy eyes

Mal Cobb ~ Rinzler
the one who turns mean and evil, or possibly just misunderstood; the one who keeps showing up to disrupt plans; the one who is vanquished in the end

Saito ~ Alan Bradley
the one who sets the whole thing in motion; the instigator; the one who knows more than he lets on

Ariadne ~ Sam Flynn
the newbie; the one who is introduced to a new world and gets in over their head; protege of crazy eyes

Eames ~ Quorra
the totally badass one who gets stuff done; the one who is awesome at fighting in ‘creative’ ways

Yusuf ~ Zuse
the one whose help comes with unexpected side effects; the one who mixes chemicals and operates a questionably shady business

Robert Fischer ~ Clu
the one who’s in control of the environment; the one whose minions are trying to kill everyone else; the one who needs to reconcile with his dad

The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships, by igrab

Tron fic is proving surprisingly hard to come by. But I liked Dillinger Jr, and I like the idea of an Encom Christmas part (I guess I’m not quite over the holidays yet). I’m having a tough time suspending disbelief for some common fanon ideas — Sam and Ed Jr. were friends as kids (love the idea, don’t totally buy it), programs can come into the physical world and pass as humans (programs *already* exist in our world — as programs!). But hey, I didn’t totally buy the Billy/Kat love connection either, but I still liked Earthsiege. (/random Power Rangers flashback.)

I liked this fic too, in case that wasn’t clear.

As the evening winds down, Junior’s come to two conclusions – one, that Quorra can’t possibly be human; and two, this can’t possibly be the last he sees of her.

So… starandrea and I went to see Tron Legacy again, this time in IMAX 3D. 3D glasses were subpar, movie was still interesting the second time through. Still do *not get* the purring thing.

Inquiring minds want to know:

1. Re: Dillinger Jr. Why doesn’t he clap at the meeting? Who is he calling when he walks out? Where does he go? Is he the Mike of his team the movie? (A: Yes.)

2. Re: Carl (the police impound lot guy). How well do he and Sam know each other? Best understated ‘this is the only character development you’re going to get, so enjoy it’ moment of the movie.

3. Re: Alan. How much does he know? Does he have a key to Sam’s apartment, or did he just break in? Did he go to the grid to search for Kevin after he disappeared? Who currently owns the arcade?

4. Re: Kevin’s office. The clock/timer screensaver thing. What was it counting? Time since last activation? The leftmost number was 20, which would match the number of years since Kevin’s disappearance — maybe it was a reminder of how much ‘real world’ time had passed for when Kevin came back from working on the grid?

5. Re: the grid, specifically the portal. So, you *appear* in the replica of the arcade, somewhere in the city. But you have to *leave* through the portal, which is out in the middle of nowhere? How does that even work?

6. Re: Kevin Flynn. Crazy like a fox, or just sheer crazypants crazy?

7. Re: Sam. (Who apparently inherited his dad’s propensity for changing his shirt at socially awkward times.) Why did he never do anything cool with the second lightcycle wand he picked up? (I was waiting and *waiting,* and nothing. It was easier to watch the second time.)

8. Re: disks. Identity disks are to programs as… *what* is to humans? Because Tron had one, but then he nabbed a second, and then as Rinzler he had two, and then he lost them both, and then he (sort of?) rebooted as Tron, so… Also, Zuse talked about forged identity disks, and Sam obvs. didn’t have one when he was picked up in the beginning, which seemed to be a punishable offense but not exactly ‘oh horror of horrors a program with no disk how can he function?’ And of course Quorra and Kevin swapped disks, which seemed totally weird.

9. Re: ISOs. They’re going to change the world how? Because they’re programs that self-generated? How does that translate to eliminating disease? I’m confused.

10. Re: Quorra in particular. ‘Hey, it’s obvious that I’m an ISO b/c of this nifty thing on my arm. You know what would be smart? Wearing an outfit that makes it *super easy* to spot!’ Yeah.

(*where ‘today’ actually means ‘Monday, but I got distracted.’)

This kid I once knew, by Minnow (Calvin & Hobbes)
Susie in college, finding Calvin’s comic strips online. I think I was most drawn to this one because somewhere deep down in my heart of hearts, I hope I someday feel this mature about my former classmates. It’s nice to think that maybe we all do grow up to wish each other the best.

She doesn’t write, except to write, “I love this one. I love them all,” on her favorite strip, anonymously.

Lions and Tigers, by starlingthefool (Calvin & Hobbes / Inception fusion)
Eames is Calvin, all grown up (mostly).

In a jungle in Eames’ subconscious, Arthur turns at the sound of a twig snapping. He turns with his gun drawn, muscles taut and ready for a fight. He’s not ready to see a tiger; massive, lithe, striped orange and black in great big fuck-off stripes, paw frozen in the act of stepping towards him, green eyes fixed on Arthur’s.

Zeroes and Ones, by classlicity (Inception/Tron fusion)
Inception on the Grid! (What more do you need?)

Tapping twice on his visor to make it recede, Arthur narrows his eyes at the Trojan who’s conspicuously cycling his power lines through the rainbow again. “The chance to cause chaos, destruction. You viruses like that, right?”

Of Bowties, Trains, and Pajama Parties, by igrab (Tron, Tron Legacy)
Sam and Ed meet at Encom’s ‘take your child to work day.’

When Flynn got back to his office after his afternoon meetings (which, booooring), he found the boys in his office playing with trains – which he could have expected – but also both wearing pajamas, which he should have expected but somehow didn’t.
