*the idea of 'checking the perimeter' as an acknowledged stand-in for 'I want to go be alone for a while, and also do something vaguely useful'
*as in "maybe it just needs some perimeter time"
*and also: "so, how's the perimeter?" "is that a joke?" "sort of"
