November feels like a loooooooong time ago now, even though it's been less than three weeks since it ended. But way back in yesteryear (three weeks ago or so), I finished my half-nano fic, and now it's posted!

Title: Sanctuary Code

Author: marcicat

Fandom: Murderbot (TV), The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells)

Characters: SecUnit | Murderbot, ART | Perihelion, Pin-Lee, Arada, Ratthi, Palisade Combat SecUnit, Gurathin, Iris, Dr. Mensah, Lutran

Tags: AU, Found Family, IN SPACE, mutual administrative assistance-ship, avoiding talking about feelings, or anything else, SecUnit to the rescue

Summary: A series of awkward conversations.

Authors note: This started as an AU look at one way 'Exit Strategy' might go in a Murderbot (TV) universe, then gradually went off the rails, as stories sometimes do.

About to rec this one for fic rec Friday, realized I haven't actually read it yet, got excited that now I have a new fic to read!

Following Protocol, by Astral_Insanity

Sure, there were plenty of parenting guidebooks available, but none of them quite addressed the nuances of his life.

Working for an anti-capitalist terrorist organization as the captain of an espionage crew (which included your daughter) and a giant fuck-off warship was apparently not very common.

Reference Check, by v838monoceros

He opened a private line in the feed. Perihelion, he sent, letting a bit of his confusion and annoyance through. Can you explain why exactly Mariana of Shipping Solutions Inc. is asking for a reference for one Security Consultant Rin, who apparently served with us on you for three years?

Going Old School, by CharmingMonsters

I could probably push the mug off the furniture surface using the drone’s propulsion system, but I was getting a 99.2% risk assessment that this action would cause mug to break. That had an 84.6% chance of turning this incident from a minor annoyance into a Big Fucking Deal involving meetings and consensus and talking about this, ugh.

Upgrade, by lyricwritesprose

Ratthi got to his feet carefully. “Do you know how to install an energy weapon on a cleaning bot?”

From the side, Ratthi could see SecUnit’s eyebrow quirk very slightly in what he had come to recognize as some form of amusement. “No. But I know who to bother about it.”

Translation: Gurathin was about to have another upsetting day.

Bonus fic rec, for a Tuesday!

in recognition, by isilee

SecUnit had sent him a link to his own retirement announcement, as well as a certificate it must have made. The certificate had tasteful, intricate scrollwork at the borders and a beautiful font, and the words "MOST SENSIBLE HUMAN" in capital letters across the top.
marcicat: (badger book)
Okay, this one kind of got wonky on me at the last minute, because I really should have learned by now not to have two versions of the same file in use at the same time... ANYWAY, MOVING ON. Also, I realized that I never added any of my Battleship Exchange fics to dreamwidth this year, so there's an item for the to-do list. But here is what I wrote in September!

Murderbot! Crows! What's not to love?

WHATEVER THIS IS!
*In that way that tumblr does, this week the tumblr-sphere latched onto 'dangerous crow boy whose job it is to eat plastic.' The author of the book that spawned the concept provided a great example of embracing the situation and rolling with it, posting the Plastic Girl vs Dangerous Crow Boy - FAQs to their blog.

“Eden,” I said. “Did you hack our SecUnit’s governor module?”

“No,” it replied firmly. Then it looked off to the side and muttered, “I gave it the codes and let it decide for itself whether to apply the hack or not.”

Social Competition, by scheidswrites

"You know,” Gurathin said, “I think we’re witnessing something very noteworthy.”

“The most violent game ever played on Preservation?” Overse said. In the distance, Ayda saw SecUnit tackle Three around the waist and they both went down amid another small cloud of dust.

Here's the stuff I wrote for Battleship! Eventually I will get around to putting the ones that are connected into actual series pages. That is definitely something that will probably happen. At some point.

The Murderbot Diaries
*Standing where I am now
Just some peaceful explorers on a mapping contract, accidentally running into potentially dangerous fauna. (Of course it had to be in a cave.)

*see myself at the finish line
SecUnit and Three run a security training scenario. (Okay, it's a game.)

*one and the same
Murderbot drops off of ART's sensors for .03 seconds. Iris investigates, and finds a cat.

*lighting up the hall
2nd in series. There are kittens on the Perihelion. They're pretty sure they're kittens, at least. 75% sure, maybe.

*the longest stand
Iris runs into a familiar face on a less-than-legal side trip.

*the side that I'm on
Murderbot and ART have feelings about learning to pilot a spaceship.

Murderbot (TV series)
*never walked the party line
AU of Season 1, Episode 6 (the hopper repair and Leebeebee reveal). Murderbot comes up with an alternate suggestion.

*future in my sight line
AU after Season 1, Episode 9 (post-cliff dive scene). The team offers Murderbot a different path, and a choice.

*Learning all I know now
2nd in series, post-canon AU: Murderbot and the scout ship go on a road trip.

Battlesheep Potemkin, by Slybrarian
"That doesn't really explain why they're all sheep, though," Mariner said. "Anyone want to make a bet about it? I'm thinking that this is Q-related."

"I don't know," Boimler replied. "I'm thinking it's a cross-dimensional thing. Like, the ion storm caused them to swap with their counterparts from the sheep dimension."

*The Untamed
arranged (adored), by Eicas
Wei Wuxian wouldn't even get to see his groom again before the wedding.

This was something of a shame, because Wei Wuxian had a great number of things to ask him, the most important of which was what on earth was he thinking?!

[Podfic] the guqin player next door, read by sisi_rambles (fic by marquisguyun)
Lan Qiren meets someone who is far older than he looks.

send your signal home (bring me back to you), by Crowned_Ladybug

SecUnit doesn’t dignify me with an answer, which I suppose is still better than it sulking. This includes its regular form of sulking such as not listening to me or initiating a shutdown cycle, and the new kind it seems to have recently invented which includes shutting itself in a bathroom and acting like I exist exclusively in the ceiling for the sake of more conveniently arguing with me.

Property Exception, by tottiki

I didn’t have to let it happen. Of course, that had been true for a lot of things in the little over 40 000 hours since I’d hacked my governor module. I’d kept letting things happen anyway, mostly so I wouldn’t have to make that final call on whether to go on my destined killing spree or be disassembled. But this specific thing, I really didn’t have to let happen.
