In a day filled with far too many awkward moments, perhaps the MOST AWKWARD (that I'm willing to share on the internet, lol) was when I said I'd been listening to an audiobook on the drive to the office, and this led to a brief exchange about books, and then my boss asked: "Do you like Harry Potter?"

CUE THE AWKWARD PAUSE

My brain had about a dozen thoughts at once, including 'yikes' and 'oh no this conversational minefield just became MUCH MORE DANGEROUS' and also 'is this a test?' because I am highly suspicious of any questions I'm asked at work.

I made an attempt to equivocate my way around the question until I could land on the relatively safe sub-topic of, 'I thought it was great how the books encouraged so many kids to get into reading.' And then we had a meeting to start and the conversation didn't continue. PHEW.

The things of light, by deliciousblizzardshark

Harry nodded slowly. “I just… I don’t know what else to do,” he admitted.

Mary pointed to the man still dancing Harry across the front of The Prophet. “What does he do?” she asked.

“He’s an artist– he paints. And he goes for long walks. He reads books.”

Mary smiled. “Well, there are a few options. I think if you considered it you’ll think of a few more.”

This one popped into my head earlier this week when we had several days of mist, and I enjoyed re-reading it. A classic from back in the day!

There Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain, by Faith Wood (faithwood)

It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that's ever so cross.

Yesterday I wore my Hufflepuff t-shirt to work, because why not. (The dress code at work is laughably vague and mostly only applies if you are A) an important employee, or B) they think someone important might see you.) Also, my workplace is full of people who Don't Understand That Reference, so there was a humor element for me.

I did have one person strike up a conversation with me, inquire politely about my family, and then absolutely adorably not make any assumptions about whether my not being married meant that I might have (or not have) a partner, boyfriend, or girlfriend. (It was For Real super respectful; I was impressed.) But I figured it was like Neko Atsume -- you say good morning to someone enough times, and they bring you a momento, or in this case, a conversation.

But then when I got back to the apartment, a neighbor actually *called out to me* to say hello and then have a chat while we cooperated to get the oil cap off in her car. (I've lived in this building for five years; I've never exchanged more than hellos with any of my neighbors. This was very unusual.) She specifically asked about Harry Potter, and said her kids liked it, and that she'd seen the latest movie, and we talked about doing things with cars ourselves and not having to get someone else to help.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's the shirt.

Being a fan of the fanfic but not super familiar with the source material sometimes gets super weird. This happens to me a lot with Harry Potter, because I work with people who love the books & movies, and I always want to be all, ‘Yeah, HP is great, absolutely!’ But what I mean is: ‘I stopped reading after book 4 but I just spent the weekend reading a 200,000 word time travel AU and it was A+ fun.’

(Occasionally it comes in handy, because sometimes obscure book things get disproportionately focused on in fanfic. Usually it just leaves me with wacky gaps in my knowledge.)

Here’s a fun fact that came from neither books nor fanfic, but that I learned from my daily trivia calendar: the HP spell “avis” has the effect of “creating a small flock of birds.” (I have So Many Questions.)

Somehow, I only just this week got around to reading Floriography, by Endrina (an epilogue for the ‘Secret Language of Plants’ series). Pretty sure I was smiling and happy sighing all the way through.

Harry returned home at the age when most people start thinking about leaving.

A huge thank you to susannaoh for figuring out I was talking about The Meaning of Geranium, by Endrina (part of the The secret language of plants series).

And of course it turns out I *did* have it bookmarked, and have also recced it before! This is the summary I put on my pinboard bookmark:

“Severus and Remus raise Harry together in secret, which goes great until it doesn’t, and Harry goes to Hogwarts, which goes terribly until it doesn’t, and then everyone fights Voldemort, which is hard even when you have a Seer on your side.”

Which sounds cool! But the series is over 350,000 words long, and that summary just didn’t help much when I was trying to find something based on ‘that one where Percy gets exasperated that his dad keeps getting into life-threatening situations, and I think he gets an awkward romantic moment with someone but I can’t remember who.’

(PS: It was Oliver Wood.)

((PPS: Thank you susannaoh!))

I was going to rec that Harry Potter fic where Percy Weasley is a Seer, and also seriously needs a nap, because I’ve been thinking about it a lot this week, except I thought I’d already done a post about it. But then I went looking and not only could I not find a previous post, I can’t find the fic at all. Which is weird. (I mean, not that weird; I’m not a very diligent bookmarker.)

Anyway, anyone remember that fic? Percy Weasley, Seer, basically had a vision of one of the twins dying and orchestrated years of work into making sure it didn’t happen, also he had to keep saving his dad a bunch of times, and there was a big climactic battle at Hogwarts that involved — something bad that could fly? (I mostly remember being much more invested in ‘Percy Weasley: 10,000% done with this’ than the battle plans.)

1. Last night: electric candle in the window, behind a white shade. Stinkbug, on the bulb. Yeah, that shadow just about did me in when I saw it.

2. Today is our workplace yankee swap. So far I'm two for two in getting blankets. What will this year bring???

3. Another Christmas fic, Harry Potter style: Un Noel tres parisien, by Femme (femmequixotic) and noeon (noe).

Pansy fed the owl a treat from the bowl on the windowsill. Draco reminded himself to remove it before Scorpius arrived next weekend; the last time his son visited, he'd eaten half the bowl before Draco had noticed.

Sticking with the Harry Potter trend for a third week! This fic holds the (dubious?) honor of being the only fic I've ever read with Theodore Nott as a romantic lead.

Extremely light-hearted, extremely AU -- featuring helpful mirrors! blind dates! everyone lives!

Finding Mr Right, by Nia_River

Wherein Ginny thinks Heidi needs to get laid, Hermione make *so many* charts, Lily wants grandbabies, the romantic prospects sometimes verge on the horrifying, and James Potter just wants to know what’s so wrong with Heidi joining a convent!

FYI: this is the series that ate last weekend (oops) and a not insignificant portion of this week (no great loss). But I thoroughly enjoyed it! (I also skipped all the way to the end *really* early on, just to check. Look, it's important to me to know what I'm getting into before I get 300,000 words in.)

The secret language of plants, by Endrina

[I have no quote. I'm slightly concerned that I might start reading it again if I click one of the fics, and I really do want to get to work at some point.]

Future’s Past, by darkseraphina

This one reads like a completely enjoyable regency romance novel (absolutely intended to be a compliment, as someone who loves a good regency romance!). All of the Tragic Past pretty much wraps up after the first few chapters, and from then on it is all Enjoyable Correspondence and Strolling in the Garden. Plus, kids and cats. It is as if this story was made for me.

(PS: I had only the vaguest of ideas of who most of these characters were in the HP universe, and it did not impede my enjoyment of the story in any way!)

Harry Potter again! A post-War fic where Harry moves in with Andromeda to help with Teddy.

The Years Before Love, by Lomonaaeren

Today is rain, and a second cup of tea without nasty potions in it, and Andromeda talking softly to him about her own childhood—it was hemlock, but otherwise his guesses about what plants would be on Black teacups were right on the mark—and then Teddy crying imperiously to remind them what’s really important here.

Sometimes it’s just nice to go back and hang out in the Harry Potter fandom.

In Which Harry is Magnetic North and Draco Is An Idiot, by bryoneybrynn

Potter waved a dismissive hand at him. “That part’s not hard. Just Floo them up and say, ‘Hello, I know we haven’t spoken in ten years and we hated each other’s guts back at Hogwarts, but would you like to come a party with me to help me piss off my father?’”

Slithering, by astolat

Set immediately after the war — I really liked seeing the recovery from Draco’s perspective. Also another fascinating take on Narcissa Malfoy, one of my fandom faves.

“So.” Harry paused and stared at him through the gates, evidently at a loss when he couldn’t yell and stamp his foot any longer.

(Sometimes it’s so nice to drop back into the fic world of Harry Potter!)

Stately Homes of Wiltshire, by waspabi

Potter looked almost surprised to see him, the idiot. He had visited Draco’s home, whomever else could he possibly expect? “Hello,” Potter said, with an aborted half-wave. Thin winter sunlight gleamed off his high cheekbones, yet another in a long line of irritations. “Your gate thinks I’m a wastrel.”

Harry Potter and the Incredibly Organized Personal Assistant, by megyal

Best exchange:

Harry thumped his head on the table again, even as Malfoy rose to his feet and sailed to the entry door, pulling it open to bellow, “You lot go home! I’m hired! Get away now, you’re all worthless.”

“You know, I’ve never liked him,” Ron mused, “but he has quite a good bellow.”

Harkening back to fandoms of yesteryear with a Harry Potter rec!

It Takes a Village, by Saras_Girl

Eighth year isn’t exactly going to plan. Harry is definitely not running away, Draco is definitely not impressed, and it’s almost definitely not going to stop raining.

[with special thanks to jerakeen, who’s been pinboarding HP fics lately!]

The journey back to find the context for some of the quotes that stick with me is sometimes a bit of a facepalm situation. I remembered this one mostly as having to do with hiding? Definitely something about hiding, and then confronting Peter (presumably with an angry tone!).

The thought passed through Harry’s mind that he finally understood the satisfaction Draco and Severus had always gotten from spitting out the name ‘Potter’.

-from Malfoy Flavor, by Vorabiza

Turns out it was a bit more complicated than that, as the story itself is very long, but there was definitely hiding. Secret identities! Secret parents! Secret plans! It was a rollercoaster of a re-read.

Yesterday, before work, I was waffling over whether to read A Private Reason for This, by Femme (femmequixotic). In the ‘go for it’ column: I had some extra time. In the ‘but why?’ column: I don’t even like murder mysteries!

Anyway, I started it. But it’s long, so I couldn’t fit it all in before I had to leave for work.

Which led to me being kind of distracted all day.

Anyone at Work: “So I have an important work question.”
Me: “That’s cool, but let’s talk about the real issue here. Who killed Hannah Abbott?”

And then I got home and finished the fic, and there were tears and feels and probably all day today I’ll be saying things like ‘but murder is just so heartbreaking, don’t you think?’

In conclusion: good fic, definitely reminded me why I don’t read mystery/crime stories more often.
