My day in numbered list format!

1. Free breakfast = good breakfast.

2. Networking and I don’t mix.

3. “Business is not a zero sum game.”

4. Organic cheese puffs were only the tip of the iceberg. Who knew healthy food included so many pastries?

5. The reason I’m not carrying a bag isn’t because I have somehow failed to be offered a dozen bags on my way to your booth. I have no bag because I don’t want you to hand me anything that might need to be put in a bag.

6. Why is a man the featured speaker at an event called ‘women in naturals’?

7. PS: GMOs are important.

8. PPS: Thank goodness for the expansion zipper thing on the luggage I’m borrowing from *Andrea. (Thanks, *Andrea!)

Ah, the allure of free stuff. I picked up a pen shaped like a twig today. Why? I don’t know! It was free, I had a moment of weakness.

That is also my excuse for the plastic pedometer, the canvas bag I already have, and what has to be the ugliest blender bottle ever to exist. (Though the bottle does have cool features. It’s just also really ugly.)

I am already looking at my suitcase and thinking, ‘how will I possibly fit all of this in there?’

Goal for tomorrow: find someone giving away a zippered bag so I can use it as a second carry-on.

One of my favorite things about this show is that there tends to be a lot of free food around. One of my least favorite things is that people keep trying to get me to leave the free food and go out to networking dinners, where I will be expected to act sociable and and interesting. Luckily, this year my coworker is ready and willing to take up the challenge!

Last night:

Coworker – “I’m going out to dinner, want to come?”
Me – “Great, have fun, I’m going to rest up from the flight. Back at the hotel. In my room.”

Four hours later, she calls me:

Coworker – “I’m going out for drinks, want to come?”
Me – “I’m in my pajamas. Reading. Thanks for asking, though!”

Day 1 — relatively smooth sailing, aided by the fact that no actual sailing took place. One of the options this year was that you could borrow an iPad, like taking out a library book. I admit that I signed up for one mostly to see what iPads are like, with the secondary motivation of thinking it might be easier to post here with an iPad instead of the nook. (It is.)

But the level of technology present in my room is approaching ridiculous levels. I have an iPod, because you need music, obviously.* And my nook, because it’s not great for posting, but it’s awesome for reading and writing. And my phone, to keep in touch with home, take pictures, and at least nominally stay connected with my coworker /trip companion, plus alarm clock! And then there’s the chargers! And now the iPad! (It’s not me that’s capitalizing those Ps, by the way, apparently that’s automatic.).

[*note: I cannot do the coffee maker earbud amplifying trick this trip; coffee maker has no filter basket. A cup is stepping in admirably.]
