say again your last, by smilebackwards

John is sewing one of Rodney’s MCKAY nameplates onto the sleeve of his uniform jacket before he thinks, okay, maybe this has gone too far.

It's been a looooooooooooong time since I read Pegasus Purgatorio by MrsHamill, and I haven't read much SGA at all in a while, but it's over 80000 words and I can count it as 'book with a two word title' for the summer reading challenge, so let's gooooo!

Rodney straightened. "You think we're ever going to be able to go back to Earth?"

"I don't know. Maybe someday."

It's GAME DAY for football fans, and I thought to myself 'oh hey, what about that fic? with the football game?'

Excellent day for a re-read! Still a classic, from way back in 2006:

Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead, by Speranza

He's about to push the laptop cover down when he has another thought, and runs a search for "Colorado" and "football."

I was talking with my parents yesterday and we had a whole chat about repetitive stress and computer work, shoulder pain, back pain, etc -- all those things that apparently grown-ups talk about, haha.

Good news: I managed to get through the entire conversation without blurting out 'everything I just said I got from a Stargate Atlantis fanfic.' Real life kudos to me!

On the other hand, I wasn't able to suggest doing some things left-handed and still avoid laughing, so I didn't mention that little tidbit of wisdom.

(It was Advantage, by Resonant, a fic which really isn't about repetitive stress from computer work, but the line "Can't you do some of your touchpad work lefthanded?" has stuck with me since 2005 (?!?!?!), so it counts!)

An old school Stargate Atlantis rec this week, via BlueMeridian! (I was so startled to see a livejournal page, and then startled all over again when I started thinking about how much fandom has changed over the last nine years.)

From 2008:

Or Something Like It, by semivowel

(Basically, John gets truth-serumed, and it takes a long time to wear off.)

Rodney does make a spreadsheet. It involves assigning himself, Ronon, and Teyla to all of Sheppard’s most people-intensive on-duty hours. And even with the three ring circus in the mess the other day, and Atlantis’ high-powered grapevine, it still happens at least three more times.

Apparently I’m in a very non-committal space right now, because I keep reading things and not bookmarking them.

So I went checking back to see if I’d ever recced to dwell is to die, by FeoplePeel
Quill’s Guardians are a group of reformed criminals at best; save the literal empath they’ve recently outfitted themselves with, Kraglin shouldn’t have to worry about hashing out his feelings with practical strangers.

And I haven’t (I don’t think), but I did find two other fics that I have no memory of but enjoyed reading (re-reading?) off an old bookmarks list.

Living Arrangements, by scifislasher
“Kendrix, please,” he protested. “Hacking is such a loaded word.”

Poems, Prayers, & Promises, by Cyanne
“And don’t think I didn’t notice that you managed to miss the official proclamation. Good thing I wasn’t planning on calling on the Senior Staff to say a few words seeing as the heads of two of my departments were busy eloping at the time.”

*Andrea, this is totally the fic I was talking about last weekend, with the Canadian bacon and being on hold on the phone! (It took some determined sifting through of my past posts, given that those aren’t exactly super clear search terms, but now, success!)

Thicker Than Water, by Julad

The one where John and Rodney visit Jeannie in Canada, eat Canadian bacon, go skiing, and John tries to contact his father. Also, shopping!

General O’Neill found them eating eggs. “McKay, Sheppard. Come with me.” He led them to the gate room and pointed to the huge stack of cornflakes and ramen noodles by the gate. “I got your package,” he said.

“Oh,” John began, and then trailed off.

O’Neill frowned at him. “You forgot the Lucky Charms. You want to be a leader, Sheppard, you can never forget that soldiers work twice as hard if they have marshmallows for breakfast.”

Many thanks to bluemeridian, who posted a bookmark for this series right as I’d decided I wasn’t going to be able to find it!

Series: Retrograde, by LtLJ

The bit I remembered was from Least Resistance, at breakfast time (no surprise there):

“Good morning, this is Radio Free Atlantis with your community announcements. It’s day six with no safety perimeter violations, Ancient technology-related accidents, or invasions! Give yourselves a hand!”

I have been greatly enjoying reading through the fic tag at skoosiepants’ tumblr.

(Which made me think, ‘don’t I recognize that name?’)

SGA flashback!

Once Upon a Furry Octopus, by skoosiepants

“Okay,” Rodney narrowed his eyes at him, “I think we’re missing something important about the pens.”

No list of memorable stories for me would be complete without Fat My Dust, by Speranza. I don’t know what it is about it, exactly, except that I’ve been both those kids, and I remember being so amazed when I first read the fic that someone had put those feelings down in words.

And of course, the line that sticks with me the most isn’t really about that at all, but it’s the one I always remember when I think of the fic:

“…it would have been nice to have seen that bad-ass attitude on mission every once in a while…

So many Speranza stories are awesome candidates for memorable quote Monday, but this one has TWO parts that I actually remembered surprisingly well, so I went with it.

Fic: Kid A, by Speranza

Quote #1
“Look, he’ll break it off.”

Quote #2
(Do you need to warn about spoilers for a story from 2006? Anyway, this bit is right at the end.)

“That’s…”

“—great, yeah,” John says, supplying the word for her, and Elizabeth says, “Well, yes; yes, of course.”

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long on this one.

From the series Bell Curve, by rageprufrock

“Things like this never happen when I kept office hours, Rodney! I never accidentally get a baby, Rodney!”

Exponential Curves, or, Chance

This series is like the double whammy of quotable quotes, since it’s also the source of:

I enjoyed watching it!

You know what it reminded me of?

Who’s Left and Who’s Leaving, by fiercelydreamed

Where’s Betty? Oh, tra la la, why would she be intensely interested in what the Avengers are doing? Nothing to see here.

Where are Pepper and Jane? Oh, off doing other things, ha ha, why would they be here? Very busy, you know how it is.

Where are Darcy and Ian? Who? No, no, they’ve gone off, we’re not tracking them, no idea what they’re up to at all.

Where’s Bucky? Oh, we don’t know. Nope. Still a Complete Mystery. No leads. Nothing. They say he’s a ghost, you know, have you heard that?

Where’s Pietro? Oh, he’s “dead.” Did I say that with air quotes? I meant dead, it’s very sad, so sad. Crying. These are tears. Tears of sadness.

Where’s Bruce? Oh, you know how it is, sometimes you just disappear off the grid in a stealth jet that no one can track, right? Nothing to worry about.

I’m just saying, one of the amazing things about fandom is alternate readings of the canon, and when I combine ‘the Avengers are aware that there is a much larger threat looming’ and ‘public opinion of the Avengers shifts faster than the wind’ it’s not a super far jump for me to get to ‘Avengers secretly build secret hideouts all over the world for secret planetary defense plan.’

It’s a secret. Obviously.

I really wanted this week to be:

“I’m being promoted to Atlantis?”
“Sure, let’s call it that.”

Which I thought was from the story “Where Eagles Dare (We’ll Be Playing Poker A Hundred Miles In The Opposite Direction)” but the internet informs me was actually from “A Team is Borne.” (Both stories by 01100100, aka Danvers.)

But I can’t seem to find a working link for either of them, so, switching over to the Supernatural fandom, another classic line:

“They’re good dogs!”

Of all the really cool parts from A Beautiful Lifetime Event, by astolat, this is the one line I usually remember.

(Okay, I remembered it totally wrong, which has been true for most of these — in my memory it was “I didn’t realize I was already married,” but the memo part was so great I couldn’t leave it out.)

“I just didn’t realize I was already fucking married, I thought there would at least have been a memo or something.”

-A Beautiful Lifetime Event, by astolat (the one where John and Rodney have a baby thanks to an Ancient device, and they name her Hypatia and they are totally married without realizing it)

Every year, a few more flowers bloom.
-Freedom’s Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose, by synecdochic

This is one of those fics that always, always makes me cry. (But in a good way?) This is the story of after — after you’ve been the hero, or the villain; after you’ve done the biggest thing you’ll ever do — what then?

The other line I always remember is Ronon’s:

“You’re fine,” Ronon says, and the weight that has been building in Rodney’s chest for the last week or so eases, because he is and he knows he is, but it’s easier to believe when it comes from someone else, someone who knows enough to be able to make the assessment.

Also there’s a sequel, and that one actually doesn’t make me cry, and so I’ve read it a couple extra times: and the band’s playing “hail to the chief”, by synecdochic.

I read (most of) the B-titled fics on my nook on Sunday.

Still a favorite:
Blast Boxers, by Allothi

(Inception AU: “Eames is a supervillain, and Arthur is the reporter he always kidnaps.”)

I also discovered a nook mystery. After finishing the A’s, I thought to myself, ‘hey, don’t I have Advantage saved on here?’ Searching for it specifically, by name, it pulls up perfectly. I can see it, I can open it, no problem. But it doesn’t appear in the ‘my downloads’ folder with everything else. So — where is it?

(Note: I have long suspected that I’m losing things *somewhere* on the nook. I’m just not sure whether it’s a quirk of the device itself, or a direct result of me not having a clue what I’m doing around technology.)

Forty Days, by thingswithwings

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Rodney agreed, hitting something with a wrench and then jolting back as blue sparks came out of a different crystal. “It’s not like I want to coerce him into having sex with us or abandoning the cultural traditions of his now-dead home planet or anything, but jeez, forty days?”

I’ve been poking around on my nook to see what’s on there (386 stories! I must want to read at least one of them!), and last night rediscovered Kid A, by Speranza.

At first I thought it was the one with amnesia (it’s not, that’s Amnesiac, also by Speranza). And I would have said I don’t particularly care about Stargate Atlantis right now (those crazy kids and their traveling city!), but these stories are awesome.

Still good, after all these years! Well worth a re-read.
