That’s right — only two weekends after this before Christmas. That means only two weekends (and a day) to fit in those classic Christmas film choices like:

The Muppet Christmas Carol
Die Hard
Charlie Brown Christmas

Those are pretty much the only three on my must-see list this year, although there’s lots of other great ones that I’m sure will come up.

And of course reading lots of Christmas fic! I just checked my pinboard tag and it looks like there are a lot of good stories to be had.

Goal for the day: combine productivity and sloth for a fantastic day of pre-Christmas-ing!

Not having seen the new ‘Man from UNCLE’ movie myself, I wasn’t quite sure where to start with all the new fic. blueMeridian to the rescue!

Early favorite:

A time for many words, a time for sleep, by Zinnith

Author’s summary: A relationship progressing through a series of naps.

Now *that* is my kind of story!

Many thanks to bluemeridian, who posted a bookmark for this series right as I’d decided I wasn’t going to be able to find it!

Series: Retrograde, by LtLJ

The bit I remembered was from Least Resistance, at breakfast time (no surprise there):

“Good morning, this is Radio Free Atlantis with your community announcements. It’s day six with no safety perimeter violations, Ancient technology-related accidents, or invasions! Give yourselves a hand!”

good times

I have been having a great time ::cough:: at work ::cough:: working my way through all my pinboard tags. I mean, it’s taking a while, but having an AO3 page up on your computer is a lot less obviously non-work-related than, say, a seven and a half minute youtube video of the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol prison break scene. (Just as an example.)

I have particularly been enjoying my “summaries,” such as they are. I’m not a very detailed pinboard tagger, and in order to get myself to do it at all, I typically just put down the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the fic. This leads to a lot of random summaries, like:

“The one where Tony does a hail mary and Wanda sends him back in time to fix everything. Skrulls!”

(For This time tomorrow (where were we?), by dorcas_gustine. Surprisingly, I’m pretty sure I actually remember this fic!)

It’s also made me especially grateful for AO3 (not just for it’s blending-in-at-work attributes), because so many of the lj links no longer work. (For instance, apparently I once read a fic in which Kurt wears Puck’s hoodie, and also one I summarized “Lucifer gets handsy with Sam, who’s not sure the best way to deal with it,” both of which definitely sound like they’d be worth a re-read.)

In conclusion, reading is fundamental.

I have zero pinboard tags for The Emperor’s New Groove. AO3 has 33 listed works for The Emperor’s New Groove. Since I do not have today off from work, and did not think of this yesterday, I leave this as a placeholder and a reminder for myself — maybe check some of those out!

(As an actual fic rec, I liked Sending Out an S.O.S., by fauvistfly — Teen Wolf, worth getting the song stuck in your head.)

I keep meaning to do a WIP weekend, where I go through everything tagged WIP on my pinboard and sort out what’s been finished.

This is not that weekend.

But I read this fic yesterday, and it was cute:

Sharing Is Caring, by theleaveswant

(Inception; sleepy morning cuddling; inspired by TFLN: “Just rolled over and found your boyfriend in bed with me. Is mine at your house?”)

I was skimming through the Pacific Rim fic on pinboard and AO3 last night, as one does, and it was a beautiful microcosm of fandom classics: kid!fic, domestific, mental bonding (canon!), hooker!fic, high school AU, and — of course — coffee shop AU. Because apparently no fandom can be complete without a coffee shop AU these days.

(And possibly no discussion of coffee shop AU could be complete without a shoutout to I’ve Got Nothing To Do Today But Smile, by gyzym. Seriously, I couldn’t remember the title so I googled ‘inception coffee shop au’ and it was the first result.)

(In fact, was Inception the last movie that got lots of fic that didn’t have huge amounts of semi-canon background (Star Trek, anything Marvel or DCU)?)

Extra note: Pacific Rim fic was a nice change from Teen Wolf’s all teen angst, all the time fic. Grownups! They are interesting!

1. I am against the new Dreamworks movie Turbo for one very important reason: I’m worried it will steal the punchline of the only joke I know, the one about the racing snail.

2. My workplace hired a new employee, and today was his third day. He clocked out for lunch and never came back. At this point we are still debating between firing him and calling his dad to make sure he’s okay.

3. My current pinboard to-read list includes hockey werewolf rpf, harlequin Skyfall, and semi-post-apocalyptic POI. ILU, fanfic.

It turns out bluemeridian and I both watched ‘Rise of the Guardians’ yesterday, and apparently we’ve also both spent time since them reading fanfic.

Here’s one grabbed from bluemeridian’s pinboard:

Bunnymund visits grown-up Sofie, by anonymous (kink!meme fill, but totally gen)

“This one’s new.” Bunny settles on the bench next to her and drops a basket of chocolate between them. “What’s her name?”

And this is one I stayed up way longer than planned reading:

188 Hugs, by Icka M Chif (mischif)

Sandy snapped his fingers, a disappointed look on his face as an image of Bunny doing ‘I’m a little teapot’ swirled above his head. Bunny growled in return, narrowing his eyes and the image quickly disappeared, Sandy suddenly looking highly angelic and innocent of any possible teasing.

[Read ALL the fanfic? YES!]

First saw it bookmarked on blueMeridian’s pinboard:

Here Comes the Rush, by gonetoarcadia

Steve/Tony, and I read it because blueMeridian said “Made me smile from start to finish.” (Very true.)

Deciding to catch Tony Stark is easy, but Steve expects the actual catching to be somewhat more difficult. There are plenty of reasons Tony might have reservations, and despite having a few years of practise under his belt now, Steve still isn’t exactly sure what the best way to convince Tony is going to be. Which is why he’s surprised to find that it’s almost as easy as breathing.

Happy 2013!

There are so many things I could resolve to do, to be, to change this year. 2012, for all its wild turns and ups and down, maybe wasn’t such a bad little year after all. I ended it with 1750 blog posts and 3036 pinboard tags, two numbers I’m oddly proud of.

I’d like to read more, write more, listen more. (Learn more, give more, be more.) With 365 days ahead, the possibilities abound.

Also, I liked this post from Good Stuff Happened Today.

What You Can, by Hanne Blank

You did it while you were exhausted, while you absorbed that news, while you listened to that diagnosis, while you waited to hear something that would change things you weren’t going to be able to ever change back. You did it while you rode the train. You did it while you drove home. You did it while you dialed that phone number that time, and waited for “hello?”

You did it in the dark and you did it by your wits and you did it alone, because all of us ultimately do. You also did it in broad daylight and with the help and love and strong backs of others helping to make it possible, because all of us ultimately do that, too.

You did it the way only you know how. You did it. You found “I can.”

I found this fic when I was searching pinboard for “peter.parker.” (Pinboard has some interesting quirks in the search feature, I’ve noticed, or possibly I’m just not good at using it.)

Things this story mentions by name:
1. tumblr
2. fangirls
3. the A-Team

Things this story does not mention by name:
1. Peter Parker

(It is still totally awesome! And it does mention certain photographs that appear to have been taken from unlikely angles, which is kind of *like* a Spiderman shoutout. Is that still a word I can use? Shoutout? I still like it.)

The coming storm is gonna be a crazy ride, by twistedingenue

Basically, this story is: Darcy is awesome, Jane joins Team Science, and there is a plot that involves AIM. And trolls. Actually, the trolls might have been sort of accidental.

“I’m sorry Tony, I stole her from your PR department,” Darcy says with a shrug.

“Whatever, I’m going to pass out now.”

“Night boss!” says Carrie, waving her foot a little bit.

Just a quick thank you for the “global tag page.” Now that I’ve finally figured out how to *get* to it, I can feel that delicious-shaped hole in my recent fic-reading habits slowly easing…

they tell me their secrets (will you tell me yours too), by etothepii
Sherlock (BBC), the one where John can talk to inanimate objects (and they talk back)

I *love* the part about John’s computer.

“I’m not letting him in this time! Just like you told me!” shouts his laptop when John walks into the flat with the groceries, and Sherlock looks up at him.

“I see you’ve changed your password,” he says, which is news to John. “Is it no longer your last four phone digits plus the surname of your last serious girlfriend?”

“Might be,” John replies noncommitally (it had been the last time he logged in, which was just this morning to check his email), even as his laptops chirps gleefully the random numbers and letters it’s changed John’s password to.

NOTE: This is bookmarked on my new pinboard account. (So far my biggest qualm with the program is that I can’t seem to remember the name. Pinball, Pinbucket, and Pinup have all been tried at various times, and that’s just today.)
