two cakes!

Celebration time: I just uploaded an image! Hey, haven’t been able to do that for a while; I didn’t actually think it would work. So the problem that I couldn’t figure out a cause for has somehow resolved itself. Thanks, technology!

Also, it seems like a good day to revisit the two cakes theory. (I’ve got tumblr attributing the comic to stuffman, but the original content link doesn’t seem to go anywhere.)

*I wrote some kind of a journal post on 362 days last year. (What happened, September 12th?)

*For a total of 363 posts! (Apparently I couldn’t resist a second post on January 14th, announcing I’d forgotten my lunch at home. Good to know, past self.)

*Top three tags (aggregate, since I don’t know a way to see just a year’s worth of numbers): my thoughts exactly, work is work, picture time.

*Goal for 2016: 366 posts. (Leap year!)

No luck googling the http image error. (Well, plenty of luck — it seems like a pretty common thing. Just a lot of suggestions I’ve either already tried or can’t figure out how to do.)

But I’ve been meaning to look into other ways to store images online for a while, and maybe this is the catalyst. Is flickr still a thing?

(File under: sometimes the internet makes me feel old.)

Enormous hugs and kudos to *Andrea for fixing all our sites yesterday!

Happy 2013!

There are so many things I could resolve to do, to be, to change this year. 2012, for all its wild turns and ups and down, maybe wasn’t such a bad little year after all. I ended it with 1750 blog posts and 3036 pinboard tags, two numbers I’m oddly proud of.

I’d like to read more, write more, listen more. (Learn more, give more, be more.) With 365 days ahead, the possibilities abound.

Also, I liked this post from Good Stuff Happened Today.

What You Can, by Hanne Blank

You did it while you were exhausted, while you absorbed that news, while you listened to that diagnosis, while you waited to hear something that would change things you weren’t going to be able to ever change back. You did it while you rode the train. You did it while you drove home. You did it while you dialed that phone number that time, and waited for “hello?”

You did it in the dark and you did it by your wits and you did it alone, because all of us ultimately do. You also did it in broad daylight and with the help and love and strong backs of others helping to make it possible, because all of us ultimately do that, too.

You did it the way only you know how. You did it. You found “I can.”

icon check

A couple days ago I took a picture of my hot chocolate (as one does):

hotchocolate

And then I thought to myself, “I wonder if that would make a good icon?”

And then I thought, “Don’t I already have an icon kind of like that?”

And THEN I thought, “Maybe I should categorize my icons, because that would be sort of like doing something productive, but more fun and less — well, productive.”

So, by the numbers:

Out of 99 icons, 20 of them are cats.

13 are birds, with a subset of 8 ‘birds standing on one leg.’

A whopping 29 are ‘other animals,’ including unicorns, dinosaurs, badgers, and the alot.

I’ve also got 11 ‘nature’ icons and five I lumped under ‘people.’ (Does Misha Collins need his own category?)

Which doesn’t at all add up to 99. But it did prompt me to make a suggestion to dw_suggestions about how awesome it would be to be able to sort by icons the same way we sort by tags.

[Questions:]

[Is a tiger a cat? Or, because it's Hobbes, should it count as fandom? What about a DW Dreamsheep Uhura? Computers, animals, or fandom? Do cat pawprints in snow count under cats, or nature? Do wings around a heart count as a person, or should I just accept the necessity of a miscellaneous category?]

For anyone reading at the wordpress site, commenting is off. While the auto-spam is sometimes hilarious, the frustration is winning out. I’m relatively confident that I have managed to deactivate commenting without accidentally deleting anything important.

All posts are mirrored over on dreamwidth, with extra tags and iconage. Comments welcome!

From xkcd’s Ablogalypse:

“In about six months, the word ‘Tumblr’ will eclipse ‘Blog’ in Google popularity. I doubt TV anchors will start talking about ‘reactions in the Tumblverse,’ but then again, I still can’t believe we got them to say ‘Blogosphere.’”

Sooooo…….

I was just thinking, today, about how I have all of these awesome icons, and SOMEONE just upgraded my icon space, and you know what I don’t have any icons of?

Food. But I love food! A lot.

On the other hand, I just nabbed this cute owl icon from copperbadge today! Thanks, copperbadge!

NOTES FROM TODAY:

1. Now officially a camper; residence achieved in the Awesome Cabin.

2. Updated WordPress (again). New font looks v.serious; feel like I should write something important (but am not actually planning to).

3. Have written some words. Evenings were easier (longer, at least) before I realized how much smarter it was to go to bed before midnight.

Every once in a while wordpress pops up a little message on my screen, letting me know there’s a new version available, and would I please update, like, now?

As far as I can tell, there are three options for how this upgrade works:

1. Everything is fine.

2. The upgrade fails, leaving me with the uneasy feeling that I’ve done something very, very wrong that will come back to bite me later.

3. My journal is deleted.

After the Great Upgrade Kerfluffle of 2010, which was resolved with a great deal of work by starandrea and outside internet wizards, I’ve been coasting along with option 1, but I still get nervous when I hit the button.

Today, an update — here’s the text you see when you say ‘Yes, Please Update Without Deletion Pretty Please With Cherries And Whipped Cream.”

Unpacking the update…

Verifying the unpacked files…

Installing the latest version…

Upgrading database…

(loooooooooooooooooooooong pause)

WordPress updated successfully

::triumphant glee:: Really, you’d think they could at least put some exclamation points after that last bit.

Thanks to starandrea and her wonderful Christmas gift to me, I’m planning a name change for both my dreamwidth accounts. This decision involved a significant amount of facepalming on my part, along with a somewhat alarming new love for icons, and should impact only a very small number of people.

Soon-to-be Changes
current marciratingsystem will be swapped and become marcicat

current marcicat will become marcicatverse (hopefully)

marcicat: that was easy (that was easy)

Customer: “Do you have the moon calendars?”
Me: “Yes, do you know which one you’re looking for?”
Customer: “Well, the ones for 2011.”

Me: “Would you like some free samples to go with that gift card?”
Customer: (suspiciously) “Do they cost anything?”

Me (trying to get our sister store to send us some extra stock): “Do you have any extra water bottles you could send us?”
Coworker: “… Do we carry those?”
Me: “Well, yes, actually.”
Coworker: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen them.”
Me: ::facepalm::

(PS My categories are back! Still no love on the title, but maybe that will mysteriously return as well!)

*Andrea sent me this link to JournalPress, and I used one of my Dreamwidth invite codes to start The Marci Rating System (dreamwidth style!).

Here goes something!
