Going way back in (internet) time for this one, for a Harry Potter fic quote. (And I actually found it this time!)

“I’ll protect you with my dormant well-spring of untapped power.”
-from A Time to Change, by Sansa (quote is from Chapter 9)

[This is what I have learned from nearly half a year of memorable quotes: I have NO IDEA how my brain works. Why do I remember some things and not others? What makes something stick out as funny, or sad, or happy? IT IS A MYSTERY TO ME.]

I’ve been wanting to use this quote for a few weeks now:

“Come on, my plan is way better — it has an action element.”

To the best of my recollection, it’s from a Harry Potter fic that featured Harry, Draco, and Severus fighting off attackers in a forest. But it’s not like that’s really a searchable amount of information, especially since I’ve likely gotten the quote slightly wrong.

However! I was telling my family about this dilemma, and my sister remembered *this* quote:

“This plan lacks a certain dynamic quality.”
-from Agenda, by Lanning (part 8 of the Identical series)

Which is also awesome! (And she remembers the source, which is about a million points ahead of me.)

This fic has nothing to do with the United States, the 4th of July, or anything remotely patriotic. But the final chapter was posted today, and I liked it, so here it is.

The Printed Press, by Soupy_George

Draco Malfoy was still slightly amazed that he was standing on the doorstep of Number Twelve Grimmauld Place. He never would have thought that Harry Potter’s very public and very … sweary, emotional explosion would have led to him offering Draco, of all people, a job.

It’s always interesting when I’m sort of tangentially in a fandom, but haven’t paid attention to the canon in forever, and then fanfic is all “Surprise!”

(My former example of this was Blaise Zabini in the Harry Potter fandom. I stopped reading after book… uh, the one with the tournament? Four? So Blaise kind of came out of nowhere for me, and there was a period of time in fic where he was written as a boy, a girl, genderless, could switch back and forth — it was awesome.)

And in an fantastic new development, I can now add Sara Lance (from Arrow) to that list. (Apparently she’s alive? What?) And currently I’ve read about an equal number of fics where she’s a slightly-crazy globe-trotting vigilante versus a kickass pal who hangs around giving relationship advice. (Which is to say, one each. But still!)

(The kickass pal AU where Sara sets her friends up on blind dates: Pink Drinks and Pick-Up Lines, by Frea_O.)

And then there’s some days when I just say ‘to heck with this’ and read Harry Potter fanfic all evening.

Then Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain, by Faith Wood (faithwood)

It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that’s ever so cross.

(I particularly liked the Grumpy House badges.)

In particular, comics fandom fanfic. Because comics “canon” tends to be so wonky anyway, there’s just so much wiggle room. You want someone to have a twin? Done! You want someone to be a telepathic shapeshifting clone from an alternate dimension in the future? Done!

I love comics fandom fanfic because it’s really easy to get huge variety. Like, in Harry Potter fandom, you have to figure at least fifty percent of the fic is going to deal with defeating Voldemort. But in X-Men fandom, who *knows* what might happen! Magneto might be a bad guy, or a good guy, or teaching at the school but still be morally kinda dubious, or have amnesia, or not even be mentioned!

Also, I love that I never feel like I need to explain how a situation came about in a comics fanfic. Like, if I ever wrote an Avengers fic where they had a moon base, I would feel no need at all to explain why or how. It would just be ‘bam! moon base!’ (This is a fandom where in actualfax canon the team keeps winding up in a land populated by dinosaurs, apparently mostly by accident. A moon base would be small potatoes for them.)

In short: Comics fandom — the ultimate handwave.

How does that song go? “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on”? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’s been a wild ride, and not always in the fun way. But the joy of nano-noveling isn’t in the *doing*, necessarily, but in the *having done* — looking back and going “I wrote this?! How did I do that?”

That’s where I am tonight. I wrote this?! How? Why? And in a nano classic, while skimming through the file: I don’t remember *any* of this!

But here it is. 50,000 words of fic. Amen.

title: this is how the world begins
author: marcicat

word count:
summary: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and all the fandoms come out to play.

And really, was it that much of a stretch? Vegas had vacationing demons, Ohio had angels that ate pie, New York had masked superheroes. Okay.

Note 1: I have not read through this fic. At all. Edits/fixes still to come; posting now as a placeholder and proof of finishing.

Note 2: Somewhere along the way I apparently decided ‘chimerae’ was an acceptable pluralization of ‘chimera,’ despite all logic and grammatical evidence to the contrary. Sorry about that.

Now that it’s 2011, it must be time to do a 2010-in-review. Well. 2010. It sure was something, wasn’t it? I’m going on record as saying 2011 is going to be an awesome year. (No Olympics, but we do get a royal wedding, and that’s got to be good for morale, right?)

Here’s my writing year-in-review. I didn’t hit 100,000 words (91,685), but it was more than I remembered.
