EPIC FICS

starandrea is off on another trip tomorrow, and requested some EPIC FICS to help pass the flight time.

EPIC FICS AHOY
Irreconcilable Differences, by determamfidd
(I haven’t read this one, but it’s really long!)

The Consultants, by thebratqueen
(The Avengers – White Collar crossover.)

Gadarene, by unpossible
(The Merlin AU.)

Hide Of A Life War, by Etharei
(The one where Stiles and his dad get caught up in a hostage situation.)

A Before Q, by schweinsty
(Not really epic length, but if this is the one I think it is, I liked it.)

Seems like a bit of a theme with these ones…

I (created from fantasies) exist solely for you, by Mizzy
(The comic book office AU, where everyone thinks Iron Man is a villain.)

Keep Your Enemies Closer, by keptein
(Iron Man goes rogue because the politics are easier.)

Secrets of a Successful Marriage, by valtyr
(Everyone has a secret identity and sneaks in and out of the house a lot.)

Engaging the Enemy, by tsukinofaerii
(Iron Man fights SHIELD and kidnaps Steve a lot.)

And in case you liked, ‘Field Trip,’ here’s some Iron Man: Armored Adventures fic:

All That Tomorrow Brings, by TARDIScrash

Living in the Future, by Closer

I laughed, I giggled, I chortled. (Fair warning: I did not actually follow what was happening with all the plans and counter-plans. This did not detract from my enjoyment.) Definitely a rec!

The Consultants, by thebratqueen

White Collar crosses over with the Avengers in a case fic that is awesome, and features Neal pretending to be Tony’s new assistant (even though he already has one) and Mozzie bonding with Bruce about conspiracy theories.

“Which of our cases was similar to Iron Man and the Hulk wanting us to commit fraud for them?” Peter asked. “Because I have to tell you I’m racking my brain and nothing’s coming to mind.”

How does that song go? “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on”? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’s been a wild ride, and not always in the fun way. But the joy of nano-noveling isn’t in the *doing*, necessarily, but in the *having done* — looking back and going “I wrote this?! How did I do that?”

That’s where I am tonight. I wrote this?! How? Why? And in a nano classic, while skimming through the file: I don’t remember *any* of this!

But here it is. 50,000 words of fic. Amen.

title: this is how the world begins
author: marcicat

word count:
summary: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and all the fandoms come out to play.

And really, was it that much of a stretch? Vegas had vacationing demons, Ohio had angels that ate pie, New York had masked superheroes. Okay.

Note 1: I have not read through this fic. At all. Edits/fixes still to come; posting now as a placeholder and proof of finishing.

Note 2: Somewhere along the way I apparently decided ‘chimerae’ was an acceptable pluralization of ‘chimera,’ despite all logic and grammatical evidence to the contrary. Sorry about that.

There were a few questionable aspects to this movie.

1. The title is Too Long. (The full title is ‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.’) I cannot remember all those words, and it seems a little pretentious. Like, that’s a lot of title to live up to, and the movie just doesn’t, quite.

2. Poor planning, poor choices, highly skeevy implications of abuse and/or sexual coercion. (Exhibit A: Four people, four marbles! Was there anyone who didn’t see this problem coming, except the characters themselves?) ((Exhibit B: Bakery, 24-hour fast food joint, perfume shop, Bath & Body store — really, the *only* solution Percy’s mom could come up with was marrying an abusive man with body odor?))

3. Highly disturbing visual imagery. If you don’t like snakes, or things that move in a snake-y way (like a hydra), this movie’s a definite skip. (Also, they carry Medusa’s head around. And then end up storing it in Percy’s mom’s fridge. WHO DOES THAT???)

But it also had some very fun aspects:

1. Jake Abel! HOLA, JAKE! I would love to read a story where he did not turn out to be the bad guy in the end. He was *hilarious* in his pre-evil scenes. Loved it!

2. Also loved the concept of Olympian bastard children (and assorted others) blending living in the modern world and training their old-skool powers. (The scene where Annabeth says — totally serious — that she’s never been on a real Quest before, like that’s a thing, and she should totally be checking that off the list. Awesome.)

And then there were some things that were just weird:

1. Pierce Brosnan. The centaur thing didn’t bother me, it was the hair. I couldn’t get past it. Every time he was on screen, all I could think was, “That’s Pierce Brosnan. But that hair!”)

2. Annabeth is played by Alexandra Daddario, who also played Kate in White Collar. Like, at the same time — the movie was released in 2010, and she was on WC between 2009 and 2011. I mean, crossover potential for sure, but really, really, weird crossover potential.

3. Why were the Greek gods giants? I sort of… didn’t get that part. I liked Poseidon’s hoodie, though. (Gee, there’s a shocker.)

I love sam_storyteller’s Neal and Peter. And his Elizabeth. And Sherlock. And John. And all of them. Pretty much I just love the idea of Neal and Sherlock running around London committing and solving crimes just for fun.

Rematch, by sam_storyteller (copperbadge)

Author Summary: “Neal and Sherlock’s rematch in London was the high point of the International Law Enforcement Conference — until Neal’s tracker went dark.”

“No, science is boring. Anyway it overlaps DI Lestrade’s thing on community crowdsourcing,” Neal said, uncapping a pen and crossing out a series of presentations, seemingly at random. He caught Peter watching. “There are…certain things I can’t attend,” he said.

“Why?” Peter asked.

“I have a history,” Neal hedged.

“I’m aware.”

White Collar “Forging Bonds”
I expected more — the more that fandom has already provided re: the epic backstory of Neal and Peter and Elizabeth and Kate and Mozzie.

Things I liked: baby Satchmo! (of course!), and Clinton Jones. He rocks.

Fic I liked better: Precious Few Heroes, by OnYourMark
The one where Neal’s really an undercover FBI agent named Elliot Donnelly.

Hawaii Five-0 “E Malama”
What’s not to like? It has running through the jungle, and strong women all talking to each other, and Steve talking Danny down from assault while simultaneously building a jungle trap.

I’ve already linked the ep tag, by gyzym, so how about a shout-out to the Hawaii Five-0 Cliche Meme being hosted by angelgazing. It’s a fun-for-all!

Reasons other than the Superbowl why I (and my tiny attention span) have been reading fanfic this week instead of watching tv.

1. no commercials
2. often has a more satisfying ending
3. shorter

Glee
Closing Doors, by carolinecrane
(the one where Puck keeps coming over to the house, and it takes Kurt a while to figure out why)

Can’t Tell You What I Learned; I Could Tell You A Story or Two, by twentysomething
(the college AU where Blaine is Kurt’s TA and they have study dates)

Hawaii Five-0
We Believe in the Sum of Ourselves, by gyzym
(actual episode tag to 1.16, Monday’s ep)

White Collar
When Opportunity Knocks, by non_sequential
(crossover with Doctor Who, the Doctor runs into Neal while they’re both looking to ‘recover’ the same thing)

Supernatural
In Oh So Many Ways, by blueskypenguin
(fluffy Dean/Cas and Sam/Gabriel post-saving the world, sleeping in and breakfast)

Things we learned from this episode:
1. Mozzie is the criminal all the other criminals know and love.
2. Neal is not good at roughing people up. (He’s a lover, not a fighter.)
3. Character development: we can has! (Burn Notice, I’m looking at you! See how these characters change their behaviors and reactions? It’s a Good Thing.)

Quotes:
“How’d you stay ahead of me when I was after you? And don’t say good looks and charm.”
-Peter

“Come on Caffrey; it’s bad for business.”
“It’s not for me. It’s for Mozzie.”
“Is he the one who —?”
“Yeah.”
“You want New York or out of state?”
-forgers, Neal

“Well, he quoted Nietzche to a nurse; he’s going to be okay.”
-Neal

“Get a dog.”
“Can I borrow Satchmo?”
“No, you cannot borrow Satchmo.”
-Peter, Neal

“I have never appreciated your distrust of me more.”
-Neal

“The only options aren’t the law or a con, Neal.”
-Peter

“A music box. Plays a little tune, ballerina goes around on top?”
“This one’s a little more special.”
“It damn well better be.”
-Clinton, Peter

“Good luck with your little con.”
“It’s not a con.”
“Well, technically it is.”
-Elizabeth, Peter, Neal

Now that it’s 2011, it must be time to do a 2010-in-review. Well. 2010. It sure was something, wasn’t it? I’m going on record as saying 2011 is going to be an awesome year. (No Olympics, but we do get a royal wedding, and that’s got to be good for morale, right?)

Here’s my writing year-in-review. I didn’t hit 100,000 words (91,685), but it was more than I remembered.

1. Harry Potter fic
Light Up (sometimes a nox is as good as a lumos)

2. Burn Notice / Supernatural crossover
Ex-Spooks, Guns, and Money (send them all, there’s a party in Miami)

3. prequel to (party in Miami)
one moment in mind

4. White Collar fic
Parks are for Lovers Liars

5. Glee fic
Sing Goodbye / There’s a Rumor Going Round

6. crossover free for all (White Collar, Psych, Burn Notice, Cover Affairs, Leverage, X-Men)
Intervention (5-7-5, like a haiku)

7. nanowrimo fic
Advent

8. Hawaii Five-0 fic
Four Gifts the 5-0s Gave Each Other for Christmas

9. Christmas sequel to (party in Miami)
Christmas in Vegas (En, Nocte Venit Media)

Themes For The Year
1. titling things with whatever popped into my head, whether or not it had any relevance to the content of the story

2. complete inability to stick with any consistent header format

3. criminals
