good times

I have been having a great time ::cough:: at work ::cough:: working my way through all my pinboard tags. I mean, it’s taking a while, but having an AO3 page up on your computer is a lot less obviously non-work-related than, say, a seven and a half minute youtube video of the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol prison break scene. (Just as an example.)

I have particularly been enjoying my “summaries,” such as they are. I’m not a very detailed pinboard tagger, and in order to get myself to do it at all, I typically just put down the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the fic. This leads to a lot of random summaries, like:

“The one where Tony does a hail mary and Wanda sends him back in time to fix everything. Skrulls!”

(For This time tomorrow (where were we?), by dorcas_gustine. Surprisingly, I’m pretty sure I actually remember this fic!)

It’s also made me especially grateful for AO3 (not just for it’s blending-in-at-work attributes), because so many of the lj links no longer work. (For instance, apparently I once read a fic in which Kurt wears Puck’s hoodie, and also one I summarized “Lucifer gets handsy with Sam, who’s not sure the best way to deal with it,” both of which definitely sound like they’d be worth a re-read.)

In conclusion, reading is fundamental.

How does that song go? “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on”? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’s been a wild ride, and not always in the fun way. But the joy of nano-noveling isn’t in the *doing*, necessarily, but in the *having done* — looking back and going “I wrote this?! How did I do that?”

That’s where I am tonight. I wrote this?! How? Why? And in a nano classic, while skimming through the file: I don’t remember *any* of this!

But here it is. 50,000 words of fic. Amen.

word count:
summary: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and all the fandoms come out to play.

And really, was it that much of a stretch? Vegas had vacationing demons, Ohio had angels that ate pie, New York had masked superheroes. Okay.

Note 1: I have not read through this fic. At all. Edits/fixes still to come; posting now as a placeholder and proof of finishing.

Note 2: Somewhere along the way I apparently decided ‘chimerae’ was an acceptable pluralization of ‘chimera,’ despite all logic and grammatical evidence to the contrary. Sorry about that.

I have *no* idea what’s happening in Glee right now — who the heck is attending where? Do we still care? But this fic embodied the ridiculous-yet-somehow-endearing thing I loved about the show. Also, it made me laugh, and that’s always a good thing.

It’s the dumbest thing, but it starts (as all good high school drama does) with Facebook.

Reasons other than the Superbowl why I (and my tiny attention span) have been reading fanfic this week instead of watching tv.

1. no commercials
2. often has a more satisfying ending
3. shorter

Glee
Closing Doors, by carolinecrane
(the one where Puck keeps coming over to the house, and it takes Kurt a while to figure out why)

Can’t Tell You What I Learned; I Could Tell You A Story or Two, by twentysomething
(the college AU where Blaine is Kurt’s TA and they have study dates)

Hawaii Five-0
We Believe in the Sum of Ourselves, by gyzym
(actual episode tag to 1.16, Monday’s ep)

White Collar
When Opportunity Knocks, by non_sequential
(crossover with Doctor Who, the Doctor runs into Neal while they’re both looking to ‘recover’ the same thing)

Supernatural
In Oh So Many Ways, by blueskypenguin
(fluffy Dean/Cas and Sam/Gabriel post-saving the world, sleeping in and breakfast)

Now that it’s 2011, it must be time to do a 2010-in-review. Well. 2010. It sure was something, wasn’t it? I’m going on record as saying 2011 is going to be an awesome year. (No Olympics, but we do get a royal wedding, and that’s got to be good for morale, right?)

Here’s my writing year-in-review. I didn’t hit 100,000 words (91,685), but it was more than I remembered.

1. Harry Potter fic
Light Up (sometimes a nox is as good as a lumos)

2. Burn Notice / Supernatural crossover
Ex-Spooks, Guns, and Money (send them all, there’s a party in Miami)

3. prequel to (party in Miami)
one moment in mind

4. White Collar fic
Parks are for Lovers Liars

5. Glee fic
Sing Goodbye / There’s a Rumor Going Round

6. crossover free for all (White Collar, Psych, Burn Notice, Cover Affairs, Leverage, X-Men)
Intervention (5-7-5, like a haiku)

7. nanowrimo fic
Advent

8. Hawaii Five-0 fic
Four Gifts the 5-0s Gave Each Other for Christmas

9. Christmas sequel to (party in Miami)
Christmas in Vegas (En, Nocte Venit Media)

Themes For The Year
1. titling things with whatever popped into my head, whether or not it had any relevance to the content of the story

2. complete inability to stick with any consistent header format

3. criminals

I *love* Christmas music. Well, lots of it, anyway. Actually, way back at the end of November I thought about making a post of ‘Christmas songs I’m already sick of this year,’ but thought it lacked a certain celebratory spirit.

Since it’s now Christmas Eve (!), here’s that post!

Christmas Songs I’m Sick Of (And Have Been For A While)

1. Santa Baby
(this songs proves the exception to the ‘Muppets make everything better’ rule — then again, Miss Piggy was never my favorite Muppet)

2. the Christmas shoes song
(I haven’t heard this *once* this year — for which I’m grateful — but it still deserves a special place on this list)

3. Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey
(every person I’ve mentioned this to has never heard of this song, making me feel like a crazy person, but I found the lyrics, and I heard it on the radio yesterday — it’s real, and yes, it’s not my favorite)

4. Baby It’s Cold Outside
(despite the cuteness of Kurt and Blaine singing this song, it usually just creeps me out)

5. Blue Christmas / that one where the snow turns into rain and someone married an architect / the other one where someone says he’ll be back on Christmas day and never comes back
(it’s a three way tie and I don’t know the song titles for two of them!)

I’m back!

I’ve recovered enough from NaNo that I feel capable of writing stuff. While I tried to figure out some interesting and clever post, I caught up on tv instead.

Glee: Watched all three episodes I missed on Hulu. Eh. I was really only motivated to watch because of twentysomething’s fics, which were way better than the show itself.
Don’t Ever Look Back, by twentysomething (snowball fight)
No Regrets, Just Love by twentysomething (Blaine trying to play it cool)

Still to watch:
Burn Notice
Fast & Furious (it arrived from Netflix at the start of November, and has been sitting ever since, but it seems silly to send it back without viewing)

1. Don’t worry, the answer is yes: Sam is indeed naked again in this episode. In fact, they’ve installed tubs in the locker room just for him! (Two side by side tubs, in fact, just like a ED commercial.)

2. Puck is back, and once again monopolizing all the character development. It’s like all the other characters are from the Lightspeed Rescue season, and Puck’s from the Jungle Fury season.

3. Despite Puck, I felt like the episode dragged on, and on, and on. I kept thinking it *must* be almost over. At one point I may have shouted, “Enough with the talking! Sing something!” at the tv screen.

4. In random notes: Will continues to be the worst teacher ever. It still feels like a novelty anytime Mike has a line. Kurt and Puck had mirroring story lines, and I couldn’t tell if it was on purpose or not.
