How does that song go? “This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on”? I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’s been a wild ride, and not always in the fun way. But the joy of nano-noveling isn’t in the *doing*, necessarily, but in the *having done* — looking back and going “I wrote this?! How did I do that?”

That’s where I am tonight. I wrote this?! How? Why? And in a nano classic, while skimming through the file: I don’t remember *any* of this!

But here it is. 50,000 words of fic. Amen.

title: this is how the world begins
author: marcicat

word count:
summary: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and all the fandoms come out to play.

And really, was it that much of a stretch? Vegas had vacationing demons, Ohio had angels that ate pie, New York had masked superheroes. Okay.

Note 1: I have not read through this fic. At all. Edits/fixes still to come; posting now as a placeholder and proof of finishing.

Note 2: Somewhere along the way I apparently decided ‘chimerae’ was an acceptable pluralization of ‘chimera,’ despite all logic and grammatical evidence to the contrary. Sorry about that.

I have to work all weekend, which is frustrating, but I guess has made me do more today than I would have otherwise. Unfortunately, that’s still considerably less than I was hoping for.

SOME QUOTES, FOR GREAT JUSTICE

on technology

The man threw his hands up in the air. “They’re all reading as completely average Earth humans,” he said, sounding frustrated. “But a second ago the scanner said they weren’t there at all, and before that it said we had a basement full of lop-eared rabbits.”

on real estate

“Formerly Torchwood Four,” Donna corrected. “And the unbelievability factor was part of the appeal. Nice people, quiet town — we weren’t expecting the hidden school for mutants, but who does?”

on courtesy

He was pretty sure someone in the group would have been able to tell if ‘formerly Torchwood Four’ was secretly evil, or anything like that, but a heads up would be polite.

Through a combination of power outages and the (unfulfilled) hope that the right words would come if only I waited long enough, I’ve put off posting about Elisabeth Sladen.

So I will just say this: The character you created in Sarah Jane Smith has served as both hero and inspiration to me. Thank you. You will be remembered and missed.
